About The Speaker
managing director, J & A Beare
Simon comes from a musical family enjoying weekly chamber music with family and friends from an early age. He started his career as a professional cellist, becoming the co-principal of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra following studies at Durham University and the Royal College of Music. He subsequently played for almost ten years under the directorship of Sir Neville Marriner with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and more recently has served as a trustee.
Simon became a director of Beare’s in 1998, and subsequently became joint managing director in 2012. Simon has worked with his co-director, Steven Smith, to sell more than sixty instruments by Stradivari and Guarneri in recent years – as well as many other outstanding instruments such as the cello by Pietro Guarneri to Maestro Rostropovich, and the fine violin by J.B. Guadagnini now played by Julia Fischer.
Simon is regularly invited as an expert commentator and has appeared on the BBC, CNBC, Classic FM and contributed to The Financial Times, The Independent, and New York Times. Simon has also contributed to articles for The STRAD magazine and the four volume work ‘Antonius Stradivarius’.
Simon has a BA Hons degree in Music from Durham University, is an Associate of the Royal College of Music and an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. He still enjoys playing the cello.
