About The Speaker
cellist and former Royal Philharmonic Orchestra principal
François was offered his first orchestral position with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic soon after he graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a Recital Diploma. He moved onto a similar post with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra before joining the Sadlers Wells Royal Ballet Orchestra (now Birmingham Royal Ballet Sinfonia) as Principal Cello and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as Co Principal.
Since leaving the RPO he has pursued a freelance orchestral career, which also includes regular coaching roles with London Music Colleges (RAM, RCM, and Guildhall) as well as tutoring positions with the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra and National Children’s Orchestra, as well as various County Youth Orchestras.
François is passionate about coaching talented young cellists who choose an orchestral path, and giving them their best chance of success at auditions. For many years, he has given one on one private audition and repertoire sessions, and is always proud to see these players moving on to work professionally.
