Christian Girardin

Christian Girardin

Harmonia Mundi artistic director

Holder of a Music aggregation and a D.E.A. of Music and Musicology since 1991, Christian Girardin joined the Harmonia Mundi label this same year. Assistant to the production department under the direction of Eva Coutaz, he was in charge of the editorial department, developing new product lines and creating the “Gateways” collection, 1997-2001.

Very involved in the development of interactivity in music, together with Lorcom he has worked on several award winning CD-Rom and DVD products: “Discovering Così Fan Tutte” (1999, the “Finest classical multimedia product ever created”, Billboard, “Irresisitible” The Observer), “Matthäus-Passion, “Interactive Tour” (2000, Diapason d’or multimedia of the year 2000, Grand Prix, The Académie Charles Cros), “Beethoven’s Piano Concertos” (2004 music victory, “Best Music DVD” category), etc.

Back in Harmonia Mundi in 2001, he developed new collections such as “HmGold” and Portrait”, and assumed the direction of production in 2008. In particular, he leads the production of the Bach Harmonia Mundi Edition, The Mozart edition Harmonia Mundi (2006), Haydn-edition 2009, Harmonia Nova (2017) and the Debussy edition (2018). In 2011 he was given responsibility for all labels in the group, developing a policy of diversifying into new categories and creating new areas , JazzVillage (2012) and LittleVillage (2015), the latter being youth-oriented and distributed in bookstores.

In 2015, Harmonia Mundi ceded its “music” activity to the group [PIAS]; Christian has held the position of Director of the label since that date and led the multiple transformations that have applied both to the structure (still based in Arles) and in-depth renewal of music production.

Among the highlights of the last five years is the addition of numerous new musicians and no less than 128 international awards, including the Gramophone Award of “Label of the Year”.
