Decca Classics is one of the most famous and respected labels in classical music with a 90-year history and an unrivalled catalogue of recordings. The label is home to artists including Riccardo Chailly, Cecilia Bartoli, Nicola Benedetti, Mitsuko Uchida and Renée Fleming, as well as the legendary Luciano Pavarotti. In this role with the label, Buhr has launched the recording careers of Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Jess Gillam, and brought Miloš, Ray Chen and Hilary Hahn to the label.
After 10 years in Deutsche Grammophon’s International Marketing and A&R teams, working with artists including Lang Lang, Krystian Zimerman, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Elina Garanča, Magdalena Kožená, Gustavo Dudamel and Lisa Batiashvili, Alex Buhr was appointed Managing Director of Mercury Classics and tasked with launching the label in 2012. Over the following four years, he enjoyed major success and widespread acclaim with its career-focused strategy for artists including Tori Amos, Yundi and Andreas Ottensamer. Mercury Classics has since been relaunched as a brand new label: Mercury KX, which is home to pioneering neoclassical and electronic artists including Ólafur Arnalds, Sebastian Plano, Luke Howard and Lambert.
Buhr holds a PhD in Musicology from the University of Hamburg as well as an MBA (SMI Steinbeiss, SDA Bocconi, and Stern School of Business).
